Batley West

Batley Town Centre: The town centre is the heart of our community, and it has been let down by the Labour executive. Higher parking charges, fewer toilets, and higher crime are all a result of spending money on vanity projects rather than where the money is needed most. I will push to make Batley a safer, cleaner and more prosperous place, bringing in jobs and community spirit.

Social care: The Council is responsible for adult social care and care for vulnerable people in the community. I believe that supporting these services is hugely important, and looking after those who need it most is a key priority for me. I know personally how damaging it can be when social care services fail, and I will fight to stop this from happening. Everyone who needs social care should be able to access it when they need it.

Supporting our schools after Covid: We are very lucky in Batley West to have some excellent schools, but we need to support them recovering after the pandemic. Large secondaries like Batley Grammar and small primary schools alike need the Council’s support, particularly in helping disadvantaged students catch up after Covid. I think education is the foundation of building a strong community, and I will fight to give our schools the support they need.

Improving basic services: Bin collections in Batley West don’t stand up to the mark. We need better collections over Christmas and to expand our recycling capabilities across Kirklees to make way for a more environmentally friendly future. Equally, the Labour administration has failed to keep our roads in good condition. I think the most basic thing a councillor can do is maintain the basic services that your taxes go towards. The Labour Council has failed to do this, and if elected I will fight to get you your money’s worth.

Lower Council Tax: Kirklees Council tax under Labour has increased 33% in seven years. At a time when household budgets are stretched and when local services have got worse, this is a disgrace. If elected I would support lowering council tax year on year to make your money go further.

I would love to hear from anyone in Batley West who would like to discuss my campaign or get involved. I am very happy to answer any questions you may have. You can drop me an email at lewis.roberts@mail.com
